The Plague
When the plague comes, you will most likely just wake up in a bed. You will have amnesia, you will be soaked in your own sweat, and your throat will be too hoarse for you to talk. You will be weak, and confused.
Half the population will have died in a three day period. If you are a survivor, the amnesia will erase your memories for up to a year. You will remember many things, but not your name, or how you got there, or where you are.
The first hours you will be alone. You will be very weak and you will vomit if you move your head too much. Maybe you will find water or juice. Then you will recover faster. You will find bodies in your first day. They will be sprawled over couches or lying in beds or on the settee in the front room. You will not remember who they are, but you will have sufficient strength to cover their faces with a towel or coat. When they die of the plague, they have the foaming spittle discharging from their mouth and nose. The spittle is a yellow-white color you will never forget.
The radio will be your first contact with your own past and erased memories. Language you will remember, and some of the names of things and places. The radio will tell you about the plague, where to find water, when to look for help, and then your life will slowly begin to rebuild itself. From memories as they reappear out of your fever scrambled mind, from association with familiar objects, from reason and observation.
That is how the plague will come. You will just wake up in a new world, weak and aching bones and a scratchy throat. It is the amnesia that this plague brings that our medical leaders are afraid to talk about. Are you prepared for that?
