Worlds Tiniest Baby Going Home
With a survival rate of less than 1000 to 1, the chances of survival for premie Kimberly Mueller was not good. Kimberly arrived 15 weeks premature, weighing 10.5 ounces and just 10.2 inches long. Kimberly had an incubator for warmth, given a respirator to help her breathe and fed through a drip. Now, amazingly, Kimberly has been released from hospital and sent home:
Six months later, Kimberly has finally been allowed to go home to her parents in Hanover. It really is a miracle that this baby lived. Thank goodness for modern science, and I'm not discounting the powers of faith and hope with a heavy dose of prayer.
"Babies as small as this usually have no chance," said Dr Oliver Moeller, a heart specialist who treated her.
"We are incredibly lucky that she lived. Such a case I have never experienced. We had a lot of luck ... a lot."
During the coming weeks she will continue to be fed artificially and will need to have oxygen as her lungs keep developing.
