Swedish Spanking Law Smacked Down
In a decision that will no doubt make people who believe that they know how to raise your children better than you do, pissed, a Swedish court has decided that spanking is not child abuse. The case revolves around a Swedish couple that admitted to spanking their daughter, but doesn't think it constituted child abuse. The court agreed:
A unanimous court ruled that the father's smack did not constitute assault - it was not hard enough to be assault, nor was it done with indifference to the pain it would cause. This flies in the face of the 1979 Parenting Act that says, "children may not be subjected to corporal chastisement or other demeaning treatment."
I'm sure there will be an appeal, but as it stands, Sweden is finally getting a dose of Ikea.
I'm sure there isn't a soul out there that believes beating your child to a pulp or demeaning them is appropriate. Common sense has to rule the day when it comes to disciplining children. Some children may go a lifetime without getting a smack, but most kids need to be reminded of their manners every so often, and a crack in the head or a boot to the ass is usually the remedy to cure bad manners.
I can nearly feel that the days of pc are coming to an end, especially when it comes to jackasses who tell every parent how to discipline their children. What these people are really saying is that you either have to discipline your child THEIR way or you're doing it wrong. Most people that will tell you how to discipline a child don't even have children, and many people who have children and tell you how to raise your kids are generally sandal wearing, granola eating douchebags that need some hard discipline themselves.
Parents that think they can raise their kid by being their special buddy are in for a world of hurt. Kids don't need a parent buddy, they need a parent who can distinguish right from wrong and doesn't hold back when it comes to discipline.
Sweden--there's hope for it yet
