More American's Headed North--Time To Panic

A survey by the Association of Canadian Studies, which was reported by ABC *news*, finds that the numbers of Americans leaving for permanent Canadian citizenship has hit an all-time high. There were also quite a few other conclusions drawn by this survey:

In 2006, 10,942 Americans went to Canada, compared with 9,262 in 2005 and 5,828 in 2000, according to a survey by the Association for Canadian Studies.

Some quick math tells me that's up about 1700 persons a year. Keep in mind the population of the States in around 290 million.

And why are Americans leaving in *Droves*?

The current increase appears to be fueled largely by social and political reasons, says Jedwab.

Kertes attributes his motivation to President Bush's opposition to gay marriage, and the tactics employed during the war on terror since 9/11.

"They're coming because many of them don't like the politics, the Iraq War and the security situation in the U.S. By comparison, Canada is a tension-free place. People feel safer."

Fair enough. 10,942 Americans bolted from the States, mostly because of GWB.

What else does the survey say?

Last year, 23,913 Canadians moved to the United States, a significant decrease from 29,930 in 2005.

Keep in mind that Canada's population is about 30 million.

So, what have we learned here? Well, if 11 thousand Americans left the States last year due to GWB and his evil policies, it makes you wonder why 24 thousand Canadians immigrated to the States? Hmmmmmm. I mean, we hate war in Canada, we are pacifists. Look at the polls, 104% of Canadians are against the Iraq war and a greater number are against keeping our troops in Afghanistan.

Another interesting thing to note is, the number of Canadians leaving for the States has dropped drastically since 2005 (a significant decrease according to the article). It's funny, but around that time the federal liberals were having their asses handed to them on a place in an election. Maybe Canadians felt they didn't need to flee anymore, maybe they feel Canada is better off under a Conservative gov't.

One thing I'm positive about though, Marcus Baram of ABC news is a real scumbag and a hack reporter, and ABC news is still as balanced as it's ever been. And that's sad.
