Detroit--Even The Dead Want Out
It's no secret that the flight, white flight and otherwise, is nearly complete in Detroit. Detroit has lost 50% of its population since the 1950's, every year the city loses more than 5000 people. Now it seems, even the dead are fed up with Detoilet:From 2002 through 2007, the remains of about 1,000 people have been disinterred and moved out of the city, according to permits stored in metal filing cabinets in the city's department of health. Looked at in another way, for about every 30 living human beings who leave Detroit, one dead human being follows. Moreover, anecdotal evidence compiled by a Detroit professor suggests the figure may be twice as high, meaning city records may be incomplete and that thousands upon thousands of deceased people have been relocated from the city over the past 20 years. It has been suggested that the relatives of the deceased are digging up their loved ones and bringing them closer to where they live, so, it's a convenience thing. That's a possibility, and I'm sure that happens, but if I was to make an educated guess, I would say people are digging up ma and pa because they are scared stiff of driving through Detoilet to get to their dead relative.
Their fears are completely founded, Detoilet is a scourge on the earth. The sooner they raze Detoilet and pave it over the better. When it gets to the point where people are scared for their lives to cross 8 Mile so they can pay respects to their dead relatives, all hope is pretty much lost. Having said that, Detoileters never learn from their mistakes, and judging by the wonderful politicians they have elected year after year after decade after decade, they must enjoy living in the filth that is their disgusting city.
If you think I'm being hard on Detoilet, I suggest you go there for a day. Try anything west of 8 Mile, hell, the Cass Corridor is beautiful in the spring. Pack a lunch, bring your family, and if you make it out alive, give me a call and tell me I'm wrong. Unfortunately, I won't be hearing from you soon.
Get out while you can, River Rat
