ACLU Gives Thumbs Up To Religious Footbaths
Although the ACLU opposes all funding for religious purposes in schools, they seemed to have made an exception when it came to opposing footbaths for Moslem students at the University of Michigan-Dearborn:"Our policy is to object whenever public funds are spent on any brick and mortar component of religion," said Kary Moss, director of the Michigan Civil Liberties Union. "What makes this different, though, is that the footbaths themselves can be used by anyone, don't have any symbolic value and are not stylized in a religious way. They're in a regular restroom, and could be just as useful to a janitor filling up buckets, or someone coming off the basketball court, as to Muslim students."Also keep in mind that this wasn't the idea of any Moslem group to have the footbaths installed, it was the idea of school administrators.
For Kary Moss to say that the footbaths have no symbolic value is a plain out-and-out lie. Of course they're symbolic, they're just not symbolic to any religion other than Islam. Moslems are required to perform *ablution* (washing of the body's five senses) in order to maintain perfect concentration when praying. Up until this point, I never knew the ACLU were big proponents of prayer in schools.
Saying that the footbaths are *not stylized* in a religious way is disingenuous. Who cares is they're not, that's hardly the point. The point is that they are not being constructed to help janitors fill their buckets or for basketball players who are just coming off the court, they are being built so Moslems can wash their feet in them.
Can you imagine the outrage that's going to occur (mark my words) when some guy who's coming off a basketball court sticks his smelly feet in a *not symbolic* footbath where a Moslem is just about to perform ablution? Look out.
I suppose this means it's open season for *not symbolic* non-religious holy water basins to be built. It's not for Catholics, of course, it's for people like me who are trying to ward off vampires.
Any God but the Christian God
