Feeding the mouth that bites you
One of the nice things about working inside the education system is seeing education, first hand.
Take handouts for example. Handouts, always an important part of education, take the form of free breakfast for the victims of oppression and systemic heteronormative racism.
Without free food, these children, Toronto's future, would be too hungry to concentrate on their lessons. Being hungry and failing at school always leads to youth crime. Feeding our poor is one of the reasons why Toronto is the safest city in the world.
So, I was moved to tears of joy today when I actually saw one of these feed the poor programs in operation today. I was waiting for material in the custodians lounge when a parent came by to complain about the food. It was too cold. He offered me a greasy half of a hash brown, much as a caring Bonobo shares food as a preliminary to having sex. His manicured nails and uncallused hands spoke of a life of inadequate handouts and simmering outrage over oppression. The grease on the gold rings on his hand added a sheen of unspoken pain over the invisible snow shovel of white privilege.
I went to the classroom where the feeding was going on. The classroom, originally a place where mathematics was taught eight hours a day, had been refurbished for the morning feeding of two hours a day. If this was a barn, it would have been called a stable. There were tables for sitting and eating, and tables for heaped boxes of milk, and juice. There was a table with urns of coffee. There was a table with hotplates to fry up the hash browns, the scrambled eggs, and the sausage slab.
Far better to feed the hungry for two hours a day than to teach mathematics for eight. And not only were children being fed, but their adult care givers, too! I counted a one to one ratio of children to adults. Not only do our schools feed children, they feed anyone who can get past the open door. This liberal policy is why crime in Toronto is so low, why Toronto is such a safe place to live. These people were so hungry that there were no complaints about the possibility of unclean pork products; no, they just gobbled away. The only complaints were about the school board employee not shovelling the food out fast enough so that it was sufficently and acceptably warm on the plate.
More staff are needed, of course. And a secure garbage dumpster, because all the food attracts vermin.
I, Fenris Badwulf, saw this.
